The Black Guard are known for their destructive energy-based weaponry, yet the pilot class have always depended on the more primitive yet effecient slug projectile or calibered pistols. The original theory was that if a crashed fighter were to lose power--especially the older Sphinz class--the pilot would have to break his way out of a sealed cockpit. Conventional lasers were too dangerous because the beam could bounce off a residual shield and kill the pilot. Calliber weapons found thier use as an excape tool, and since no Black Guard is not allowed to surrender it proved usefull in enemy territory as well. Even though the more modern fighter cockpits have safety features to prevent such entrapment, the caliber weapons have remained a favorite of pilots for over a hundred years. The P-138 is an 8 caliber 11 shot pistol with a quick release cartridge. One of these fine sidearms is ceremoniously given to every graduating pilot in the Black Guard fleet.
